Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a set of symptoms that result from a hormonal imbalance affecting women of reproductive age, which affects up to 20 per cent of Australian women. It is a leading cause of female infertility. Polycystic means "many cysts," and PCOS often causes clusters of small, pearl-sized cysts in the ovaries. The cysts are fluid-filled and contain immature eggs.
The cause of PCOS is not fully understood, but genetics may be a factor. PCOS can cause symptoms like infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excessive facial and body hair growth (hirsutism), weight gain, acne and so on. The signs and symptoms tend to vary from person to person. Women with PCOS are at a higher risk for obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
For PCOS, Western Medicine doctors usually prescribe the drugs such as the birth control pill, Metformin (insulin sensitizer), Clomid (induce ovulation) and so on. If these drugs are unsuccessful, IVF is often suggested when trying to conceive.
Our practitioners utilize Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Massage and Cupping to help women suffering from PCOS balance hormone levels, improve ovary function, decrease insulin resistance and lose weight in order to promote more frequent ovulation and regulate their period which will result in pregnancy.
